The Flames That Refine and Reveal
Burning Altar is an Uncommon Event from the Stars Age, costing 2 faith. Its Discern ability gives you a powerful choice, deal 2 damage to a target Being or draw a verse. Whether you need removal or resources, this card offers flexibility when it matters most.
The Burning Altar – Where Fire Meets the Lamb
Above the horizon, beneath the Southern Cross, there lies a fire that always glows, the constellation of the Burning Altar. It's placed perfectly in the sky, declaring a holy truth about the climax of Christ’s first coming. This is the point of the story where heaven and earth beheld the fullness of sacrifice. The altar stands not as an empty platform, but as the very place where divine justice touched down in fullness.
This card's verse is Mark 9:49:
"For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt."
The flames were lit long before the earth was formed. God's fire was kindled with purpose, prepared for the enemies of righteousness, yet fully poured out upon the Lamb of God. “For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.” –Mark 9:49. These were no ordinary flames, this was the fire of holiness, of perfect wrath, and of unfailing love. It was on this altar that the Son of Man laid Himself, bearing the sin of the world with joy set before Him.
Jesus came willingly. He didn’t flinch. When the time came, He stepped forward, took the cup in His hands, and endured the flame. The cross became the place of offering, and the resurrection became heaven’s confirmation that the fire had done its work. This altar speaks of finality. The sacrifice was made. The judgment was satisfied. The fire has accomplished its purpose through Christ.

All Judgment Belongs to Him Now
The flame that once burned for justice now glows with the memory of grace. The One who faced it all has been raised from the dead and given all authority in heaven and earth. “The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son.” – John 5:22. Every judgment, every verdict, every decision about eternity is now placed in the hands of a man, the man Christ Jesus, who knows what it means to suffer, who gave Himself so others could live.
For those who believe the gospel, the altar is a place of peace. The judgment has passed over. The fire has already burned, and its effect remains. The blood of Jesus has sealed every believer into a covenant that cannot be broken. Every time this altar appears in the stars, it points to the finished work of the cross and the empty tomb, calling us to rest in what Christ has done.
But for those who reject that grace, the fire still waits. Not because God is cruel, but because He is holy. And holiness demands justice. The altar has room for all who believe, yet it still holds fire for all who refuse. “He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy... Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God...” – Hebrews 10:28–29. This isn’t the fire of uncertainty. It’s the fire of truth, and the stars shine as witnesses.
Believers, take comfort. The judgment was real, but it fell on Christ for your sake. The altar was full, but the sacrifice was greater. Grace has triumphed. So lift your eyes, see the fire above, and remember: our Savior stood in the flame, so we could walk in the light.
