The Ones Who Stood Guard

Roman Soldier is a 2 Strength, 2 Hope Soldier Token from the Gospel Age. As a Token, it is not a standard card you can include in your deck. Instead, it enters play automatically through specific card effects, particularly created by Crucifixion Centurion.

The Centurion Before the King

A centurion was no ordinary man in the Roman ranks. He was a leader of soldiers, a man tested in battle, entrusted with command, and trained to speak with authority. In the world’s eyes, his word carried weight. Yet when this centurion came to Jesus in Capernaum, he recognized a greater authority than his own. "Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed" - Matthew 8:8. This soldier, hardened by Rome’s campaigns, saw in Christ the King of Kings, a ruler who commands the heavens, speaks to disease, and governs life itself.

The faith of this man astonished Jesus. He understood the chain of command not merely in earthly terms, but in heavenly reality. Just as a soldier obeys the orders of his superior without question, so all creation moves at the command of the Son of God. His recognition of this truth was not born from Jewish tradition or the Law of Moses, but from the clear evidence of who Jesus is. The King’s word is final, and in it rests all power.

This card's verse is Matthew 8:5:

"And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,"

Rome’s legions could march across the world, but the centurion knew the true source of strength did not come from Caesar’s decrees. It came from the One who could calm the storm, open blind eyes, and raise the dead. Jesus’ authority is absolute because He is the Creator and Sustainer of all things. Every position of leadership, every soldier’s rank, and every seat of power exists because the King of Glory grants it. The centurion’s faith was an open declaration that Christ’s kingdom is above all kingdoms.

Power From Heaven’s Throne

Throughout the Old Testament, kings and warriors rose and fell at the will of the Lord. Nebuchadnezzar, the mightiest king of Babylon, learned this when God humbled him until he proclaimed "the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will" - Daniel 4:32. The centurion in Capernaum understood this principle instinctively. His own command over men was only a shadow of the sovereign reign of the Messiah.

In the presence of Christ, the centurion stood as both soldier and servant. The armor and sword could not shield him from the awe that comes when heaven’s King speaks. Faith became his greatest weapon, and humility became his greatest strength. Jesus declared that He had not found such faith in all Israel, showing that the kingdom of God would welcome those who believed, whether Jew or Gentile, soldier or shepherd.

Believer, you stand under the authority of the same King who marveled at the centurion’s faith. You are under His command, yet also under His care. You have been brought near by the blood of Christ, made a citizen of heaven, and given a place in His eternal kingdom. Your strength is not drawn from your own might, but from the One who empowers, equips, and upholds you by His grace. The King’s word over your life is victory, His banner over you is love, and His calling on you is secure forever.
