A Sacrificial Cleansing in Action
Declared Unclean is an Uncommon Event from the Torah Age, costing 2 faith and offering a unique twist on board control. It gives a friendly Being Unclean for the turn, which means if that Being is damaged it will be Exiled, making this a strategic tool for enabling trades or sacrificing a unit precisely when needed.
The Law of Leprosy
In the book of Leviticus, the priest wasn’t a doctor, he was a mirror. If a person had a skin issue, the priest inspected them according to God’s law, not human emotion. Leviticus 13:3 didn’t ask, “Do they feel clean?” It simply declared: “Unclean.” That word wasn’t medical, it was spiritual. The moment that judgment came, the person was cast out of the camp, separated from God’s people, and forbidden from worship. The law didn’t care about intention or sincerity. It saw the flaw, and it pronounced the truth. No wiggle room. No mercy.
This is the weight of the Torah. It’s brutally honest, and it’s meant to be. The law was given not to heal, but to expose. Leprosy became a symbol, an outward picture of an inward condition. The disease didn’t make someone evil, but it revealed what sin does: it spreads, isolates, and kills. When the priest declared someone unclean, it wasn’t personal, it was scriptural. God’s standard didn’t flex. And in truth, all unbelievers have leprosy of the soul. The scabs are different, but the diagnosis is the same: guilty under the law.
This card's verse is Leviticus 13:3:
"[...] and the priest shall look on him, and pronounce him unclean."
But that’s not the end of the story. The Torah set the stage, but it wasn’t the final word. It showed us the problem so we’d cry out for the cure. It taught us to look for a High Priest who wouldn’t just observe, but intervene. Someone who could touch what was untouchable, and not become defiled in the process. Someone greater than the law itself. Someone like Jesus.

The Touch That Changed Everything
One day, a leper came running toward Jesus. The crowd recoiled, but Jesus didn’t move. He let the man approach. “Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean” (Matthew 8:2). That man knew the law had no solution. Only grace could save him now. And then it happened. Jesus reached out and touched him. That was unthinkable! Under Torah, touching the unclean made you unclean too. But Jesus flipped the system. When Jesus touched the man, He wasn’t defiled—the man was healed. Why? Because under the law, when one touched something that was most holy, as in the tabernacle, it could make the unclean holy. "[...] whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy.” - Exodus 30:29
That one touch shattered centuries of separation. The priest in Leviticus could only point at your problem. But Jesus, the Great High Priest, took your problem on Himself. He was able to do what the law couldn't! Where the law declared “Unclean,” Jesus declared “Whole.” He didn’t just sidestep the rules, He fulfilled them. The law showed the curse. Jesus became the cure. He bore our uncleanness at the cross so we could walk in His cleanness forever.
Believer, you are not what the law said when under it. You are not your leprosy, your scars, your sin, or your shame. You are in Christ, and because He is clean, you are clean. You don’t have to keep checking your skin, your past, or your performance. You look to Jesus and say, “He is my portion.” The law declared the condition, but grace declares your position: holy, righteous, redeemed. You are not standing outside the camp anymore. You’re seated with Him in glory. That’s the power of the gospel of grace. That’s the truth of grace.
