Old Tensions, New Revelations

Ishmael Mocking is an Uncommon Event from the Hebrew Age, costing 1 faith and dealing 2 damage to any target enemy being. It’s simple, direct, and powerful, a clear answer to early threats and a great fit for decks that thrive on tempo and precision.

Two Sons, Two Stories, A Family Divided

From the loins of Abraham came two very different sons: Ishmael, born of Hagar the Egyptian, and Isaac, the long-awaited son of Sarah. When Ishmael mocked Isaac during the celebration of his weaning, Sarah’s heart stirred with a prophetic cry: “Cast out this bondwoman and her son” – Genesis 21:10. This was more than jealousy or family tension. It was a sign of two paths, the path of the flesh and the path of promise.

Ishmael was a result of human effort, of a moment where Abraham and Sarah tried to fulfill God’s promise through their own means. But Isaac came through faith, and God’s intervention, born by grace and not by works. This divide, begun in Genesis, becomes a picture throughout the Bible of the conflict between law and grace, self-effort and divine fulfillment. The mocking of Isaac was the rejection of promise by the flesh, and God drew a clear line that the inheritance would go to the child born by faith.

This card's verse is Genesis 21:9:

"And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking."

The fallout was dramatic. Hagar and Ishmael were sent into the wilderness, but even then, God was merciful. He provided for them, made Ishmael a great nation, and yet clearly declared the blessing of the covenant belonged to Isaac. It’s a sober reminder that God honors His Word, not the efforts of man, but the faith that rests in His power. Ishmael’s story is redirected, and the promise passes through Isaac and on toward Christ.

Grace and Inheritance, The True Seed Revealed

The Apostle Paul brings the meaning home in Galatians 4, where he writes that Ishmael represents Mount Sinai, the law, and the bondage of the old covenant, while Isaac represents the new covenant, freedom, and grace. Those who want to live by law, who try to earn their place by works, are sons of the bondwoman. But those who receive the promise by faith are the true sons of the freewoman. “So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.” – Galatians 4:31.

Jesus came to fulfill the promise made to Abraham. He is the Seed, born not of the will of man, but of God. He lived perfectly under the law and took the curse of it on the cross, “that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ.” – Galatians 3:14. Grace doesn't come by performance, it flows from the blood of the Lamb. We are not Ishmael, trying to mock and claw our way into blessing. We are Isaac, born again by the Spirit, made heirs by promise.

Believer, when the enemy tells you that you’re not good enough, when the flesh rises up to boast or to despair, remember Ishmael. Remember that flesh can’t inherit. You have been born of God, sealed by His Spirit, and placed into Christ. Walk in that freedom! Cast out the old voices, and cling to the cross. You are a child of promise, a joint-heir with Christ, and your inheritance is secured, not by what you’ve done, but by who He is.

A: Absolutely. It’s excellent for picking off Beings that survived a trade or were weakened by another Event or ability.

Q: Does this card combo well in a Pray-heavy deck?

A: Yes! Playing Ishmael Mocking can enable Pray triggers while removing a Being, making it a flexible tool in decks that rely on this mechanic.
