Born Under the Law

Jesus walked this earth as a Jew under the Law of Moses. Every step, every word, every act of His ministry unfolded in the context of the covenant God gave to Israel through Moses. He came as the promised Messiah, fulfilling the words of the prophets, the shadows of the sacrifices, and the types written into Israel’s history. From His circumcision on the eighth day to His presence in the synagogues, from the feasts He attended to the healings He performed, He was moving within the framework of God’s covenant with His people.

The gospels are a continuation of the Old Testament, not yet the beginning of the new. They lead us to the threshold of the cross, to the moment where the blood of the Lamb would establish the new testament, and better covenant, one built on better promises. Until His death and resurrection, the veil remained, the sacrifices continued, and the Law still stood in its full demand. His every act was to fulfill that Law perfectly, not to set it aside, but to bring it to completion.

"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil."

Reading the gospels with this understanding changes everything. When we hear Him instruct the rich young ruler, or tell His disciples to keep the commandments, or declare blessings on the poor in spirit, we are hearing Him speak as the King of Israel, under the Law, bringing it to its intended completion in Him. He was showing Israel that the Law’s standard was not just about outward works, but the perfect righteousness of the heart.

Fulfilled for Us

At the cross, the Law’s demands met the perfect obedience of the Son. Every shadow, Passover lamb, Day of Atonement sacrifice, priestly intercession, was fully realized in Him. His blood answered the Law’s justice. His resurrection opened the way into a new and living covenant. The Law had run its full course, and in Christ, it found its Amen.

Now, we do not approach God by effort or ritual, but by grace through faith. The Law was a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, but now that grace through faith has come, we are no longer under the schoolmaster. "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth" - Romans 10:4. We do not labor to keep the Law in order to be accepted, we are accepted by believing in God's grace, which is Jesus offered for us as a sacrifice, His death, burial and resurrection, and from that faith flows the fruit of the Spirit.

Believer, your righteousness is complete because Jesus fulfilled every requirement for you. You stand before God as one who has already met the standard, not by your strength or efforts, but by His finished work. You are under grace, clothed in the obedience of Christ, free to walk in His life and love without fear of condemnation. The Law’s voice has been silenced over you forever, and the voice of the Shepherd calls you His own.
