The Bible Story Behind Daily Communion
Paul wrote to the Corinthians because some believers were treating participation in pagan feasts as though it could be separated from their fellowship with Jesus Christ. He reminded them that the Lord's table represented an exclusive communion with the Savior who had purchased them, making deliberate fellowship with idolatry completely inconsistent with their new identity.
The cup and broken bread directed the Corinthians toward fellowship in Christ's blood and body. Paul used their shared participation to expose the inconsistency of fellowship with idols. Daily Communion takes its name from the ongoing place of that fellowship in the believer's life; 1 Corinthians 10:16 doesn't prescribe a daily schedule for the meal.
1 Corinthians 10:16 — “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?”
Communion means fellowship, participation, and shared identification. In the following verse, Paul explains that believers are one bread and one body because they all partake of the same bread. The table therefore directs attention both upward to fellowship with Christ and outward to the unity of every believer joined to Him.
The bread and cup point backward to the body Jesus gave and the blood He shed upon the cross. Christ bore our sins, died, was buried, and rose again the third day. The church doesn't offer Him repeatedly, because His one sacrifice completely paid for sin and established everlasting peace with God.
The apostolic letters reveal that Jew and Gentile are now joined by one Spirit into one body. Communion doesn't create that union or maintain salvation through ritual observance; it visibly proclaims the union Christ has already established through His finished work. Believers may differ in background, culture, and maturity, but all possess the same Savior, Spirit, righteousness, and heavenly calling.
