The Bible Story Behind Fortune Moth
During His earthly ministry, Jesus warned His disciples not to build their lives around possessions that decay or can be taken away. Clothing could be eaten by moths, metals could be corrupted, and thieves could break through the strongest earthly protection. Anything stored within this present world remains temporary, vulnerable, and unable to provide lasting security.
A moth appears small and harmless, yet it can quietly destroy clothing that once seemed valuable. Fortune Moth therefore presents the slow and certain corruption hidden within every treasure that depends upon earthly wealth, beauty, or human possession.
Matthew 6:19 says: "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:"
Jesus wasn't teaching that work, possessions, or wise preparation are sinful. He was exposing the danger of placing the heart's confidence in riches that can't survive death or enter eternity. Where a person stores his treasure reveals what he believes will truly satisfy, protect, and reward him.
The Lord continued by directing attention toward treasure in heaven, where moth, rust, and thieves cannot destroy what is laid up. That instruction gives earthly possessions a different place: they can serve people and the purposes of God without becoming the source of our security. The church can give freely because our acceptance and everlasting life have already been secured in Christ.
Salvation and reward must remain distinct. In 1 Corinthians 3, Paul describes work being tested, a reward being received, and loss being suffered, while the person himself is saved. Our works don't add to the righteousness given through Christ's blood, but what we do in His body still matters before the Lord, who will reward us at the judgment seat of Christ. Fortune Moth therefore calls us away from confidence in perishable riches and toward the lasting value of a life supplied by Christ.
