Genesis Set Card 236/250

Judith, Widow's Trickery is a Common Woman Being from the Apocrypha, costing 3 Faith with 2 Strength, 2 Hope, 2 Reach, and 3 Move. Opponents' Being Verses Cost 1 more Faith to Play.

The Bible Story Behind Judith, Widow's Trickery

Judith was a devout widow living while Holofernes and his army threatened Bethulia. The city's leaders had nearly surrendered because their water supply was failing, but Judith rebuked them for placing a deadline upon God's deliverance. Judith, Widow's Trickery presents a faithful woman entering the enemy camp with courage, wisdom, and complete dependence upon the Lord.

Holofernes believed Judith had abandoned her people and would help him conquer them. His pride, desire, and drunkenness prevented him from recognizing the danger before him. Judith used his confidence against him, waited until he was helpless, and struck him with his own sword. The commander who expected to possess Judith and destroy Israel was instead defeated through the woman he had greatly underestimated.

Judith 16:6 — “But the Almighty Lord hath disappointed them by the hand of a woman.”

The word "disappointed" describes God frustrating the enemy's purpose and preventing his plans from reaching their intended end. Holofernes possessed armies, weapons, authority, and military experience, while Judith appeared to be only one unarmed widow. Her victory showed that the outcome never depended upon visible strength, because the Almighty Lord could overthrow the proud through the hand they considered least threatening.

Judith's deliverance reflects a pattern repeatedly seen throughout Scripture: God resists the proud and accomplishes His purpose through what the world regards as weak. Yet the greatest example is Jesus Christ, who entered Jerusalem without an earthly army and allowed His enemies to nail Him to a cross. What appeared to be Christ's defeat became the means through which He condemned sin, defeated death, and spoiled the powers of darkness.

The church doesn't overcome through manipulation, physical violence, or confidence in human strategy. Believers stand within the victory Jesus has already secured through His blood and resurrection. God may use people whom the world overlooks, but salvation and lasting triumph belong entirely to Him. No believer can boast in personal strength when every spiritual victory flows from the grace and power of Christ.

Judith, Widow's Trickery Bible TCG Strategy

Judith, Widow's Trickery slows down every Opponent trying to build their Storyline. While Judith remains in play, each Being Verse an Opponent Plays costs 1 additional Faith. This is especially punishing against low-Cost Decks that want to Play several Beings in one Turn. With no other Cost modifiers, even a Being with a printed Cost of 0 costs 1 Faith while Judith's Ability applies.

Synergies

  • Being Cost control: Increasing the Cost of opposing Being Verses makes it harder for the Opponent to fill their Storyline.

  • Tempo disruption: The Opponent may need to delay an important Being or spend their entire Turn Playing only one Verse.

  • Cost-control strategy: Combining several Cost increases can slow both Being-focused and Event-focused Decks.

Questions and Answers

Q: Does Judith make a 0-Cost Being Cost 1 Faith?

A: With no other Cost modifiers, yes. Her increase makes the final Cost 1, so the payment must include matching Faith. Apply all increases and reductions before applying the minimum Cost of 0.

Q: How does Judith interact with Simon, High Priest?

A: Calculate 12 minus your Hand size, including Simon, plus all applicable taxes. With one opposing Judith, 12 Verses in Hand makes Simon Cost 1; 13 makes him Cost 0. Don't floor the reduction at 0 before adding Judith's increase.

Q: Do multiple Judiths combine, and does the tax affect Events?

A: Each active opposing Judith adds 1 to your Being Verse Costs. The Ability doesn't tax Events. Other applicable Cost modifiers still combine normally.

Q: Does Judith charge Faith for Tokens Created by an Ability or bypass Raphael?

A: No. Creating Tokens from Out of Game isn't paying to Play Being Verses from Hand. Judith changes applicable Play Costs; she neither imposes those Costs on Ability-Created Tokens nor changes Raphael's Hand-Play limit.

Q: What happens when Judith leaves or is Humbled?

A: Her continuous Cost increase stops applying to future payments. It doesn't refund earlier payments. A final Cost of 0 still requires the appropriate Faith Verse to be present; Apocrypha Verses require Apocrypha Faith.
