The Bible Story Behind Sacrificial Bullock
Under the law of Moses, a bullock could be brought as a burnt offering to the LORD. The animal had to be without blemish and was presented voluntarily at the door of the tabernacle. Because a bullock was large, valuable, and useful for labor, its sacrifice represented a costly offering surrendered entirely to God.
The worshiper laid his hand upon the head of the animal before it was killed, identifying himself with the offering brought in his place. Aaron's sons then handled the blood and arranged the sacrifice upon the altar. Sacrificial Bullock therefore presents an innocent life accepted before God on behalf of the person who brought it.
Leviticus 1:5 — “And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.”
The priests sprinkled the blood around the altar, and the offering's prescribed parts were burned upon it after preparation. Leviticus also distinguishes what happened to the hide, so the rite shouldn't be described as burning every part of the animal without distinction. The repeated offerings taught Israel the seriousness of atonement, while Hebrews explains why animal blood couldn't finally take away sins.
The sacrificial bullock pointed forward to Jesus Christ, who possessed perfect strength yet willingly submitted Himself to the Father. He was without blemish, without sin, and completely obedient. The powerful Son of God didn't resist the altar, but gave Himself willingly for those who could never make themselves acceptable.
At the cross, Jesus became both the sacrifice and the One whose blood secured redemption. Unlike the blood sprinkled around Israel's earthly altar, His blood obtained eternal forgiveness and never needs to be offered again. Christ fulfilled every shadow of the sacrificial system through one complete offering of Himself.
