Wounding Sword is a Common Event from the Apocrypha, costing 6 Faith. Deal 1 Damage to Target Enemy Being. Repeat this seven more times.

The Bible Story Behind Wounding Sword

Before the final battle against Nicanor, Judas Maccabeus encouraged his men with a vision concerning divine help. He saw Onias, the former high priest, praying for the Jewish people, followed by the prophet Jeremiah extending a golden sword toward him. Wounding Sword presents this heavenly gift as a sign that God hadn't abandoned those resisting the enemies who sought to destroy Jerusalem and its worship.

The sword wasn't presented as an ordinary weapon obtained through military preparation. Jeremiah described it as a gift from God and connected it directly with the wounding of Israel's adversaries. The vision strengthened Judas and his soldiers by reminding them that victory depended upon the Lord's purpose rather than merely upon the size, training, or equipment of their army.

2 Maccabees 15:16 — “Take this holy sword a gift from God, with the which thou shalt wound the aduersaries.”

The sword was called holy because it had been set apart within the vision for God's appointed purpose. Its holiness didn't make violence itself righteous in every circumstance, nor does the passage authorize private vengeance. Judas was fighting within Israel's national conflict against an invading power that threatened the temple and the people. The weapon represented God empowering Israel's defenders to resist an enemy whose confidence rested in human strength and contempt for the Lord.

The church hasn't been commanded to advance the gospel through physical force. Our enemies are spiritual, and the weapons of our warfare aren't carnal. Believers stand through truth, faith, prayer, righteousness, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

Jesus Christ conquered through a victory far greater than any battlefield triumph. He allowed sinful men to wound and crucify Him, yet through His death He paid for sin and defeated the powers that accused us. He then rose bodily from the grave, proving that death couldn't hold Him. The wounds Christ received became the evidence of the redemption He completed for everyone who believes.

Wounding Sword Bible TCG Strategy

Wounding Sword creates eight separate Damage instances. You deal 1 Damage once, then repeat that complete instruction seven more times. You may choose a new legal Enemy Being for every Damage instance. This lets you focus all eight hits on one Enemy Being, divide them across several Enemy Beings, or use the early hits to remove one Target before choosing another.

Synergies

  • Flexible Damage: The eight Damage instances can be focused on one large Enemy Being or divided across several smaller Enemy Beings.

  • Damage triggers: Separate Damage instances can repeatedly activate Abilities that care about a Being taking Damage.

  • Pray strategy: Increasing each Damage instance can turn Wounding Sword into an powerful Storyline control Event.

Questions and Answers

Q: How many Damage instances does Wounding Sword Create?

A: Eight separate instances: the first instruction and seven more repeats. Perform a Checkpoint after each instance, but finish the entire Event before resolving the triggered Abilities it records.

Q: Must every repeat use the same Target?

A: No. Choose a legal Enemy Being for each repeat when that instruction is reached. A Being already Exiled at an earlier check is no longer a legal Target. If no legal Target remains, the remaining repeats do nothing.

Q: How do Eternal, Anointing, and Darkness affect the repeats?

A: Active Darkness prevents selection. Eternal prevents every applicable Damage instance without using Anointing. Otherwise unused Anointing prevents one whole instance; later instances can deal Damage normally.

Q: Does Jonah Draw between hits?

A: No. Each hit he actually takes records a Draw, including a lethal hit, but those Draws wait until the Sword finishes. Checkpoints between hits can Exile him, preventing further hits on that Being.

Q: How does Pray affect Wounding Sword?

A: Increase each Damage instance by the active Pray amount. Pray +1 makes each hit 2 Damage; don't add Pray only once to the total. Later Queue items can't interrupt the Event to change Pray between repeats.
