The Bible Story Behind Balaam, Hired Seer
Balak, king of Moab, feared Israel and hired Balaam to curse the nation for reward. Although Balaam spoke of seeking the word of the LORD, his heart was drawn toward the honor and riches offered by the king. He possessed spiritual knowledge, yet desired to use it for personal gain against the people God had blessed.
As Balaam traveled toward Moab, the angel of the LORD stood in the road with a drawn sword. Balaam couldn't see the danger, but his ass saw the angel and repeatedly turned aside. Balaam, Hired Seer therefore presents a prophet so blinded by his own desire that an animal recognized God's warning before he did.
Numbers 22:23 — “And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.”

Balaam struck the animal that had actually preserved his life until the LORD opened his eyes. He was permitted to continue only under the command to speak exactly what God gave him. When he later attempted to curse Israel, the LORD repeatedly turned the intended curse into blessing because no payment or earthly king could overturn His covenant purpose.
Among Balaam's prophecies was the promise that a Star would come out of Jacob and a Sceptre would rise out of Israel. Though spoken through a compromised messenger, the prophecy pointed forward to Jesus Christ, the rightful King descended from Israel who will rule over the nations.
Balaam sought reward for opposing those whom God had blessed, but Jesus willingly became poor so that believers might be made rich through His grace. Christ bore the curse of the law upon the cross and rose again, ensuring that no accusation can condemn those whom God has justified through faith in His blood.

Questions and Answers
Q: Can Balaam Block while you're keeping him protected with Darkness?
A: No. Until Balaam Interacts, Darkness prevents him from Blocking.
Q: What happens when Balaam makes his first Challenge?
A: He Interacts, so Darkness stops protecting him. He can then be Targeted normally and can Block normally afterward.
Q: Can Seven Year Famine Damage Balaam before he Interacts?
A: Yes. Seven Year Famine doesn't Target individual Beings, so Darkness doesn't prevent its Damage.
Q: What happens if Fearful Nations affects Balaam before he Interacts?
A: Balaam becomes unable to Move or Challenge while Fear applies. Since he can't Interact, he remains under the pre-Interaction Darkness state: protected from Targeting by any Player but also unable to Block.
Q: Can Balaam's Owner Target him with a Friendly Ability while Darkness is active?
A: No. Active Darkness prevents Targeting by every Player, including the Being's Controller. You must choose another legal Target or skip the connected Targeted step if none exists. Non-Targeting effects can still affect a Being with Darkness.
