The Bible Story Behind Black Horse Rider
When the Lamb opens the third seal, a rider appears upon a black horse carrying a pair of balances in his hand. He follows the red horse that removed peace from the earth, showing how warfare and social collapse will quickly produce scarcity. Black Horse Rider presents a literal future famine spreading through the world during the opening judgments of the wrath Age.
A voice from among the four living creatures announces that a measure of wheat will cost a penny and three measures of barley will cost a penny. A penny represented the ordinary wages of a full day's labor, meaning many people will work all day merely to obtain enough grain to survive. Food that was once common will become carefully measured, heavily priced, and painfully difficult to obtain.
Revelation 6:5 — “And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.”
The balances represent the strict weighing and rationing of limited provisions. The command not to hurt the oil and wine shows that the judgment will unfold according to precise boundaries rather than uncontrolled chance. Even during worldwide scarcity, the extent and character of the famine will remain determined by the Lamb who opened the seal.
The sequence of war and costly grain presents a world in distress. Revelation later describes the beast's control over buying and selling, but it doesn't spell out every political or economic step connecting the seals to that system. The card therefore stresses the scarcity John reports, while the broader narrative explains the judgment and deception surrounding it.
The balances also expose the weakness of every system built apart from God. Mankind may control markets, measure grain, and promise economic security, but it can't create life or guarantee tomorrow's bread. Jesus Christ alone is the Bread of Life, and He first came to die for our sins and rise again so that everyone who believes in Him may possess everlasting life.
