The Bible Story Behind Deadly Scorpion
Among the signs in the heavens appears the scorpion, its tail raised and its deadly sting prepared to strike. Though its claws appear threatening, the true danger lies in the venom carried behind it. Within the Stars Age, the scorpion portrays sin as the sting that brings death, poisoning mankind from the fall of Adam onward.
The scorpion appears within the conflict surrounding the suffering Redeemer. Its sting reaches toward the heel of the Mighty One, recalling the promise that the serpent would bruise His heel while its own head would be crushed. The sign reveals that death would strike the promised Savior, yet the very wound inflicted upon Him would lead to the enemy's defeat.
1 Corinthians 15:56 — “The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.”
Paul is explaining the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15. Sin gives death its sting, and the holy law reveals the guilt that mankind can't answer through its own righteousness. The next verse gives thanks for victory through Jesus Christ. The scorpion gives the heavenly story its image of that deadly sting, while Christ's victory answers the power it represents.
Jesus alone stood without sin and therefore had no rightful sentence of death upon Him. Yet He willingly entered our condition and received the sting prepared for the guilty. At the cross, the sinless Son of God bore our sins in His own body, suffering death so that those who believe could receive His everlasting life.
The sting could wound His heel, but it couldn't hold Him in the grave. Jesus rose on the third day, proving that sin had been answered and death had been conquered. The church is therefore not under the law's condemnation, because Christ fulfilled its righteousness and bore its curse. We stand in His grace, clothed in His righteousness and joined to His resurrection life.
