The Dreadful Leviathan, Serpent of the Sea

In the depths of ancient Scripture, a terrifying creature stirs, the Leviathan. He is described as a serpent in the sea, fierce and untamable. “In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent…” – Isaiah 27:1. God gave this image not to glorify the monster, but to declare its defeat. This twisting, prideful serpent reflects the spirit of rebellion, the old adversary who once whispered lies in a garden and has prowled ever since.

Like the snake that slithered into Eden to twist God’s words, Leviathan swims in the sea of humanity, crooked, elusive, deceptive. He represents the pride of flesh and the darkness of rebellion. He’s not just hiding in shadows, he’s part of the fallen world system. Job calls him the king over all the children of pride. The ancient world feared the sea, but God's people look to the One who walks on it.

This serpent has strength, but no match for the Lord’s voice. Every coil and hiss is silenced before the breath of God. While Leviathan may seem mighty, his days are numbered. His story is in the Bible so we would know, evil doesn’t win. God made Leviathan, and God will put an end to him.

Christ, the Serpent-Crusher

Jesus Christ is the One promised from the beginning. In Genesis, God said the Seed of the woman would crush the head of the serpent. That promise finds its victory at the cross, where Jesus laid down His life and defeated sin, death, and every power of darkness. The serpent may have bruised His heel, but the heel of the Savior crushed the skull of rebellion.

At the resurrection, the tomb was empty and the serpent was judged. And one day, the final sentence will be carried out. The same Word that pierces hearts will strike the serpent, finishing what began at Calvary. “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” – 1 John 3:8.

Believer, your Savior is the victorious serpent-crusher. The Leviathan’s coils cannot wrap around your soul, you’ve been set free. Stay bold in grace, stand strong in truth, and rejoice! Your hope isn’t in escaping the sea, but in the One who rules over it. The serpent has no sting left, and Christ is your forever King.
