A Quiet Bite That Weakens the Strong
Gourd Worm is a Common Creep from the Israel Age, costing just 1 faith with 1 strength and 1 hope, making it a subtle but smart early-game play. Upon being Created, it triggers Prophecy to give a target enemy being -1 strength for the turn. This reduction makes it ideal for having another being challenge that turn against a weakened enemy being. Being a Creep, it also synergizes well with low-cost swarm strategies.
The Prophet and the Great City
Jonah walked into Nineveh, the great Gentile city, with a message from God "Forty days, and this city will be overthrown". It was a place filled with violence and idolatry, yet when the warning reached the king, he stepped down from his throne, covered himself in sackcloth, and called for a fast. From the highest noble to the lowliest servant, even the animals, the city turned from its evil ways. No other recorded moment in the Old Testament shows such a sweeping repentance. The sound of weeping replaced the noise of wickedness. Heaven took notice.
When Jonah’s work was done, he left the city and sat east of it, waiting to see what would happen. He had spoken of judgment, yet deep down he knew the Lord was gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness. Still, he watched, almost hoping for destruction. That’s when the Lord appointed a gourd to grow over him, its broad leaves providing shade from the scorching sun. It was comfort in the middle of his waiting.
This card's verse is Jonah 4:7:
"But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered."
The next morning, God prepared a worm. It came silently, chewing through the gourd until it withered. The sun rose hot and unrelenting, beating down on Jonah’s head. The shade was gone. The heat pressed in. The Lord spoke "Jonah, why do you grieve over a plant, yet long for the death of a city filled with children who do not know their right hand from their left, and many cattle besides?" Mercy was always His plan.

The Worm, the Sun, and the Cross
The gourd worm was small, yet it carried a divine assignment, to remove the shade so Jonah could feel the heat. The city escaped judgment, but the heat fell on the prophet. In this picture we see the heart of the gospel. The wrath appointed for others fell on One who stepped into their place. Throughout the Old Testament, prophecies declared judgment on Israel and the nations, but when the fullness of time came, Jesus took the heat.
On the cross, the sun of God’s wrath beat down on Him without mercy. The shade was gone. The covering lifted. He bore the weight of sin, not for Himself, but for those who had turned against Him. The worm that smote the gourd points to the moment the shelter was removed, and the Lamb faced the fire. This was no accident, it was the eternal plan, that the innocent would bear the sentence of the guilty so that they could walk free.
Believer, Jesus took every drop of the heat for you. Every prophecy of judgment against your soul was answered in His body. There is no scorching sun left for you to face, no worm left to destroy your covering. You live in the cool shade of grace, sheltered under the shadow of the Almighty. Mercy has triumphed over judgment in your story. You are covered, protected, redeemed, and kept in everlasting rest.

Gourd Worm serves as a tactical early-game tool, letting you manipulate the battlefield with clever precision. It’s designed for players who like to trade smart rather than big, using incremental advantage and combat manipulation to get ahead. In aggressive decks, it creates favorable trades. In tempo decks, it slows down opponents just enough to secure board dominance. When part of a Creep or Prophecy engine, Gourd Worm can help fuel momentum while chipping away at stronger threats.
