The Bible Story Behind Promised Return
After Jesus completed His earthly ministry, He ascended from the Mount of Olives while His disciples watched. A cloud received Him out of their sight, and they continued looking upward after He had disappeared. The risen Lord had returned to the Father, but His departure wasn't the end of His dealings with the earth.
Two heavenly messengers stood beside the disciples and redirected their attention from the empty sky to the promise of Christ's return. The Lord who ascended wasn't being replaced by another ruler, spirit, or religious system. Promised Return therefore presents the assurance that the same Jesus who died, rose again, and ascended bodily will personally come again.
Acts 1:11 — “Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
The disciples had watched Jesus depart visibly from the Mount of Olives, and the angels promised a corresponding return. This promise belongs to the completed purpose of God concerning His Son, including Christ's future reign and the fulfillment of God's covenant promises to Israel. The rejected King won't remain hidden in heaven forever; He will return openly in glory and establish His righteous authority upon the earth.
The apostolic letters later reveal a mystery concerning Christ's church. The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, the dead in Christ will rise first, and living believers will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. This gathering is the blessed hope of the body of Christ.
