The Fire That Spoke – A God Who Draws Near

The burning bush was more than a miracle, it was a divine appointment. In the barren wilderness of Midian, God appeared to Moses through a bush that burned with fire, yet was not consumed. This paradox of flame and preservation caught Moses' attention and drew him into an encounter that would change history. God revealed His name “I AM THAT I AM” and His mission to deliver Israel from slavery. This moment marked the beginning of the book of Exodus, the foundational act pointing to Jesus in the Old Testament.

The fire that blazed in the bush was a picture of God’s holy presence, a presence that burns away sin, yet preserves the one who is called. It declared that God is both powerful and personal, mighty and merciful. Moses, who once ran in fear, now stood on holy ground, commissioned to be a deliverer. And from that fire, a message went forth: God sees, God knows, and God comes down to save.

This card's verse is Exodus 3:2:

The flames of God’s wrath met the fullness of grace, and from the cross, a new understanding emerged.

From Fire to Fulfillment, The Revelation of Grace

At the cross, Jesus fulfilled the pattern of the burning bush. He bore the fire of God’s judgment for sin, yet was not destroyed. He cried out, “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” and yet in three days, He rose from the grave. The Son of God was not consumed, because He was the perfect, spotless sacrifice. Just as God spoke to Moses out of the fire, now He speaks to the world through His crucified and risen Son. The bush pointed forward; the cross points us home.

And after the resurrection came the fire from heaven once more. This time, it didn’t fall on a bush in the desert, but on the heads of the believers in the upper room at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit descended like tongues of fire, indwelling those who believed. This fire now lives within us, guiding, teaching, and empowering. Just as Moses was sent to proclaim deliverance to Egypt, so now we are sent to proclaim salvation through Christ to every nation.

Believer, we carry this fire not to consume, but to illuminate. We are now like vessels of the burning bush, lit, but not consumed, filled with the presence of God, and sent out to share His message. The final commission echoes still: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). The fire burns, and it will not go out. The One who met Moses in flame now meets us in faith, and sends us out to shine.
