Crown Of Thorns is a Common Event from the Gospel Age, costing 2 Faith. It deals 2 Damage to Target Enemy Being and Humbles it.

The Bible Story Behind Crown Of Thorns

After Pilate ordered Jesus to be scourged, the Roman soldiers brought Him into the judgment hall and gathered around Him. They dressed Him in a purple robe and formed a crown from sharp thorns, creating a cruel imitation of the honor that belonged to the King of the Jews.

The soldiers placed the crown upon His head, struck Him, and mocked Him with false expressions of loyalty. They believed they were humiliating a powerless prisoner, yet the One standing before them possessed authority over every earthly ruler. Crown Of Thorns therefore presents the rightful King willingly enduring shame at the hands of the men He had created.

John 19:2 says: "And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,"

Thorns first appeared after Adam's sin brought a curse upon the ground. Their placement upon the head of Jesus offers a powerful picture of the Son of God bearing the consequences of mankind's rebellion. The crown intended to ridicule His kingship instead revealed the suffering through which the King would redeem His people.

Jesus didn't receive the crown because He had committed any crime. Pilate repeatedly found no fault in Him, and Christ remained perfectly righteous beneath every accusation. The sinless Saviour submitted to humiliation because He was moving willingly toward the cross where He would bear our sins in His own body.

The soldiers later removed the purple robe, but they couldn't remove His true authority. Jesus was crucified, buried, and raised from the dead, proving that mockery, suffering, and death couldn't overthrow His kingdom. The One crowned with thorns now sits at the right hand of God and will return openly as King of kings and Lord of lords.

Crown Of Thorns Bible TCG Strategy

Crown Of Thorns is a strong control Event because it combines Damage with Humble. The 2 Damage can weaken or Exile a smaller Enemy Being, while Humble Cancels that Being's Abilities. This makes Crown Of Thorns useful against Enemy Beings that rely on Protect, Anointing, Resurrect, or other important Abilities, provided the Being is a legal Target.

Synergies

  • Damage And Humble: Crown Of Thorns deals Damage and Humbles the same Enemy Being.

  • Ability Control: Humble Cancels the Target Being's Abilities.

  • Pray Synergy: Since Crown Of Thorns is an Event that deals Damage, Beings with Pray can increase its Damage.

Questions and Answers

Q: If the Damage is lethal, can the Target's Resurrect trigger?

A: No. Deal Damage, then Humble the same Target before the Check because both instructions are connected in one sentence. Humble Cancels Resurrect before the Being is Exiled for having 0 Hope or less.

Q: What happens if the Target has Eternal or unused Anointing?

A: Eternal prevents the Damage first, without using Anointing. Otherwise Anointing can prevent that entire Damage instance. The Event then still Humbles the Target, Canceling its Abilities. Damage prevention doesn't cancel the connected Humble instruction.

Q: Can Crown Of Thorns Target a Being with active Darkness?

A: No. Darkness prevents Targeting by any Player. Crown can't use its Humble instruction to bypass the Targeting restriction; a non-Targeting mass Humble effect can affect Darkness.

Q: Does Pray affect Crown Of Thorns?

A: Yes, it increases the Damage. Pray +2 makes the Damage 4. Humble is unchanged, and the Check still happens after Damage and Humble have both been applied.

Q: Does Humble Cancel a Damage trigger already recorded by Crown's Damage?

A: No. For example, Jonah records his Draw when the Damage is taken; that pending trigger remains after Humble. Resurrect is different here because its Exile condition has not occurred yet when Humble Cancels it.
