The Four Bound in the River

From the depths of the ancient world, four mighty angels have been held under chains of darkness, reserved for a day of unparalleled judgment. Bound in the great river Euphrates, their captivity reaches back to the age before the flood, when the earth was filled with violence and the thoughts of men were only evil continually. These are not mere messengers, they are war chiefs of destruction, restrained only by the sovereign command of God until the appointed trumpet sounds. Their release will mark a shift in the tribulation, as judgment takes on an even more devastating force.

When the sixth trumpet is blown, the command will go forth: "Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates" - Revelation 9:14. In that moment, the centuries of restraint will end, and these spiritual giants will ride forth with unimaginable authority to kill. They will not act alone. Out from their release will surge a vast army, two hundred million strong, each rider mounted on a beast breathing fire, smoke, and brimstone. The earth will quake, the skies will darken, and the rivers will run red as a third of mankind is slain in a judgment that has no equal in history.

This card's verse is Revelation 9:14:

"Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates."

This army will sweep across nations like a flood, consuming all in their path. The locusts will have already tormented, the beasts will already rise, the dragon will already rage, yet now the earth will feel the crushing weight of death itself in a scale beyond human comprehension. The Euphrates has always stood as a border in the prophetic narrative, a boundary between kingdoms, a marker of covenant territory, but now it will become the gate of hell’s release, a channel through which God’s justice pours forth against a rebellious world.

The End of the Destroyers

These four angels, though fierce in wrath, are not eternal rulers. Their mission is bound by God’s timeline, and their power lasts only as long as He has determined. Once their work is complete, they, along with every unclean spirit unleashed in the tribulation, the locusts, the frogs, the beasts, the dragon, the brimstone riders, the destroyer, will be stripped of all authority and cast into the pit. That abyss will be closed for a thousand years, while Christ reigns in righteousness from Jerusalem. What was once the seat of rebellion will become the throne of glory, and every knee will bow before the King.

This moment will fulfill what the prophets long foresaw, the removal of all that offends from God’s creation. The same Christ who treads the winepress will restore the earth, binding Satan and every power of darkness, and ushering in the millennial reign. The Euphrates angels will have their chapter, but the Lamb will have the final word, and His word will stand forever. "For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea" - Habakkuk 2:14.

Believer, we are children of the day, not appointed to wrath but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ. We will not witness the release of these chained angels, for we are sealed in grace, hidden with Christ in God, awaiting the day He calls us to Himself. Our hope is a blessed hope, our place already secured in heavenly places, and our future bound in His glory. We walk today in the light of His finished work, filled with all spiritual blessings, confident that the One who began a good work in us will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. The world will face the Euphrates angels, but we will see the face of our Savior.
