The Bible Story Behind Guarding Jerusalem
After Jesus Christ returns and establishes His kingdom, Jerusalem will experience a population and prosperity greater than its former walls could contain. People, families, livestock, and commerce will spread beyond the boundaries once required for the city's defense. Guarding Jerusalem presents Zion flourishing openly beneath the protection of her reigning Messiah.
Ancient cities depended upon thick walls, fortified gates, and watchmen to resist enemy armies. Millennial Jerusalem won't owe her security to human fortifications, military strength, or political alliances. The city will dwell confidently because the LORD Himself will defend His people and His glory will remain in their midst.
Zechariah 2:4 — “And said unto him, Run, speak to this young man, saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein:”

The absence of enclosing walls doesn't describe vulnerability, but extraordinary expansion and peace. Jerusalem will grow beyond its former limits because the people and cattle within it will be too many for the old boundaries. The city once repeatedly surrounded by enemies will become an abundant dwelling whose safety rests directly in the covenant-keeping God.
The following verse declares that the LORD will be a wall of fire round about Jerusalem and the glory in the midst of her. Jesus Christ will reign from Zion, judge the nations with perfect righteousness, and prevent any enemy from overturning His government. Jerusalem's greatest defense will be the personal presence and sovereign authority of Israel's King.
Israel will inhabit the restored city, while the bride reigns beside Christ and the nations travel to Jerusalem to worship and receive instruction. The sons of Zadok will minister, resurrected saints and servants will occupy their appointed places, and earthly kings will govern beneath Jesus. This ordered kingdom will preserve these distinctions while bringing every people under the protection and authority of the same righteous Lord.
