The Bible Story Behind Healing Leaves
In the New Jerusalem, a pure river of water of life will proceed from the throne of God and of the Lamb. The tree of life will stand in the midst of the city's street and on either side of that river, bearing fruit throughout the year. Healing Leaves presents the life, order, and abundance flowing eternally from God's throne.
The tree first appeared in Eden, where access to it was barred after Adam's fall so that sinful mankind wouldn't live forever beneath the curse. In the new creation, sin and death will already have received their final judgment, and the way to the tree will no longer be guarded. What was lost through the first Adam will be restored beneath the everlasting reign of Jesus Christ, the last Adam.
Revelation 22:2 — “In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
The monthly fruit shows continuing order and provision within eternity, while the leaves are appointed for the healing of the nations. This doesn't require sickness, injury, or death to remain in the new creation, because Revelation has already declared that those former things have passed away. The leaves may be understood as continually preserving the health, well-being, and perfect condition of the saved nations who walk in the city's light.
The nations remain distinct from the bride, yet they receive everlasting blessing through the throne of God and of the Lamb. Their kings bring glory and honor into the New Jerusalem, and their peoples enjoy the life provided through its river and tree. God's eternal order will unite every redeemed company beneath Christ without erasing the identities and places He has appointed to them.
Jesus Christ is the true source of the life pictured by the river, fruit, and leaves. He bore the curse upon the cross, died for our sins, and rose again so that everlasting life could be given freely to everyone who believes. The new creation will display outwardly what redemption established through the Lamb: death defeated, the curse removed, and life flowing without interruption from God's presence.
