The Bible Story Behind Herod, Unjust Revenge
When the wise men arrived in Jerusalem asking for the newborn King of the Jews, Herod immediately viewed the child as a threat to his throne. He secretly learned when the star had appeared and sent the wise men to Bethlehem, pretending that he also desired to worship Jesus. Behind his respectful words was a plan to locate and destroy Israel's promised King.
God warned the wise men not to return to Herod and directed Joseph to take Mary and Jesus into Egypt. When Herod realized that the wise men had departed another way, his fear turned into murderous anger. Herod, Unjust Revenge therefore presents an insecure ruler attacking innocent children because he couldn't reach the One whose kingdom he feared.
Matthew 2:16 — “Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, [...]”
Herod ordered the death of the young boys in Bethlehem and its surrounding regions according to the time he had learned from the wise men. His command brought terrible grief to innocent families, yet it couldn't destroy Jesus or interrupt God's promise. The ruler who appeared powerful could only act within the limits permitted by the sovereign God who preserved His Son.
Herod attempted to preserve his kingdom by taking the lives of others, but Jesus established His kingdom by willingly giving His own life. The child preserved in Egypt later returned, grew in perfect obedience, and fulfilled everything written concerning Him. No sword could take His life before the appointed hour, because He had come to offer Himself according to the Father's purpose.
At the cross, rulers again united against Jesus and believed they had finally removed Him. Yet Christ bore our sins willingly, was buried, and rose again the third day. Herod's violence couldn't stop His arrival, and the combined power of religious and political authorities couldn't prevent His resurrection or overthrow His everlasting reign.
