The Bible Story Behind Peter, Jewish Apostle
Peter had been especially entrusted with proclaiming Jesus Christ to Israel, yet God also used him to open the door of the gospel visibly to the Gentiles. He entered the home of Cornelius, preached remission of sins through faith in Christ, and witnessed the Holy Ghost fall upon uncircumcised Gentiles. God had shown Peter that believing Gentiles were cleansed by faith without first becoming members of Israel's covenant system.
Later, certain men taught that Gentile believers couldn't be saved unless they were circumcised according to the custom of Moses. The apostles and elders gathered at Jerusalem to consider the matter, and Peter reminded them of what God had already done in Cornelius's house. Peter, Jewish Apostle therefore presents one of Israel's leading apostles openly defending salvation by grace apart from circumcision and the works of the law.

Peter's wording was especially powerful because he didn't say that Gentiles would be saved like the Jews. He declared that Jewish believers would be saved even as the Gentiles, entirely through the grace of Jesus Christ. Christ was buried and rose again so that salvation could be offered freely to everyone who believes. The apostolic letters reveal its completed form: believing Jews and Gentiles are justified by the same grace, sealed by the same Spirit, and joined together within the one body of Christ.
