The Bible Story Behind Saul, Strict Pharisee
Saul was a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, trained under Gamaliel and deeply committed to the traditions of his fathers. He believed that strict devotion to the law made him righteous and that the growing testimony concerning Jesus threatened Israel's faith. His religious zeal was sincere, but it was directed against the very Messiah whom the law and prophets had promised.
After consenting to Stephen's death, Saul continued attacking the believers in Jerusalem. He entered houses, dragged away men and women, and committed them to prison. Saul, Strict Pharisee therefore presents a respected religious leader using his authority and knowledge of the law to persecute the church of Jesus Christ.
Acts 9:1 — “And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,”
Saul requested letters authorizing him to arrest believers in Damascus and bring them bound to Jerusalem. He believed he was defending God, yet Jesus later declared that Saul was personally persecuting Him by attacking His disciples. The risen Lord identified Himself so completely with His church that violence against its members was violence against Christ Himself.
On the road to Damascus, the risen Jesus confronted Saul with a light from heaven and called him by name. Saul's ancestry, education, zeal, and outward obedience couldn't prepare him for the glory of the Savior he had rejected. The persecutor was stopped not because he had earned mercy, but because Jesus Christ chose to reveal the exceeding riches of His grace through him.
Saul is also called Paul in Acts 13:9. The change in the name commonly used in the narrative accompanies the Gentile mission; Scripture doesn't describe a conversion ceremony in which Jesus renamed him. His transformed purpose is the striking change: the persecutor became a witness to the grace of the Savior he had opposed.
