The Bible Story Behind Rolled Away Stone
Early on the first day of the week, women who had followed Jesus came to His sepulchre carrying spices they had prepared for His body. They expected to find Him still within the tomb and wondered how they would gain access. Instead, the barrier they couldn't move had already been removed before they arrived.
The stone had been sealed under Roman authority and the tomb had been guarded, yet neither human power nor the weight of the grave could prevent God's appointed purpose. Rolled Away Stone therefore presents the entrance to the tomb standing open so that Christ's followers could witness that His body was no longer there.
Luke 24:2 — “And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.”
The open entrance allowed the women to see that the body was gone and hear the announcement that Jesus had risen. His resurrection was God's act, not an escape accomplished by followers moving a stone. The accounts establish the empty tomb and the risen Lord's appearances without describing every physical detail of His departure from the sepulchre.
Jesus truly died upon the cross, bore our sins, and was buried, but the grave couldn't retain the sinless Savior. On the third day, He rose bodily according to the Scriptures. His resurrection proved that the sacrifice had been accepted, the judgment of sin answered, and death decisively defeated.
